RBB has a variety of tools that we use for quality inspections, some of which improve our ability to examine the quality of the components we make, some of which improve the efficiency of quality inspections–and some that do both. Here, our team member, Brian, shows off the Automated Optical Inspection machine and how we use it to inspect finished PCBs.

My name is Brian, I am running the Automated Optical Inspection machine or AOI and what this machine does is captures images of the board and categorizes possible defects. Then, I will go through and mark the possible defects good or bad and it saves a lot of time. This board would take us about forty-five minutes to visually check, the machine can do it in about forty-five seconds.

How the AOI Machine Works

Trying to visually examine a single PCB, as Brian said, can take about 45 minutes, and even up to an hour depending on the complexity of the board. An AOI machine streamlines this inspection significantly. The machine is programmed not just to gather images of the board for easy inspection–it’s also trained to categorize those images based on potential defects that it flags in each capture, and it does all of this within a minute. The operator or quality inspector can then sort through those images to quickly find actual defects. 

Quality and speed are two things that don’t always go hand-in-hand in manufacturing, but with equipment like our AOI, RBB can produce, inspect, and ship high quality PCB assemblies within our customers’ timelines. We can detect problems with PCBs and other products far quicker than with visual inspections alone, and correct those problems quicker too.
